Tamar A. Weinrib
PartnerTamar A. Weinrib represents investors in class action lawsuits to recover damages from companies that commit fraud or make misleading statements in violation of securities laws.
In October 2024, Tamar achieved a $12 million settlement for investors in PureCycle, a plastic recycling company that went public via a “de-SPAC” merger. PureCycle developed a process it claimed can cost-effectively recycle polypropylene, a common plastic that has stymied efforts by scientists and chemical companies to economically recycle it. In reality, the technology underlying PureCycle’s process is unproven, presented serious issues at lab scale, could not be achieved cost-effectively, and could not utilize a broader range of feedstock than traditional recycling. The all-cash settlement provides tangible recovery to defrauded investors – a strong win given the complexities of SPAC-related litigation, the company’s dwindling cash supply, and the fact that PureCycle has yet to earn any meaningful revenue from its sole product. Tamar served as Lead Counsel in the high-profile securities class action Strougo v. Barclays PLC relating to the bank’s dark pool trading platform. She helped achieve a $27 million settlement for defrauded investors in 2019. During the litigation, she helped win precedent-setting victories for investors at the Second Circuit and successfully opposed the defendants’ petition to the Supreme Court.
Tamar led Pomerantz’s litigation for investors in Delcath Systems, Inc., which failed to disclose to investors that its Melblez Kit, a treatment for liver cancer, resulted in far more deaths and other serious adverse events than those caused by other treatments. The litigation resulted in a settlement of $8.5 million in 2014.
Among other securities fraud class actions that Tamar led are a case alleging that Pain Therapeutics Inc. hid manufacturing issues with its pain treatment Remoxy from investors, which resulted in an $8.5 million settlement in 2016. She also led Pomerantz’s case for investors in New Oriental Education & Technology Group, Inc., a Beijing-based company accused of writing fraudulent admissions materials for students applying to U.S. colleges.
Before coming to Pomerantz, Tamar had three years of experience as a litigation associate at the New York office of a major international law firm, where she focused on complex commercial litigation.
